You may not know Eli Gross, but you may know his work. Across banks, hospitals, and public institutions, Gross quietly helped construct the visual language of Israeli society. Then, after his death in 1996, much of his archive disappeared. Designer and researcher Liad Shadmi joins Havurah at the Center for Jewish History to discuss the ongoing effort to find it—and to recover the story of a designer hiding in plain sight.

Eli Gross (1939–1996) was an Israeli graphic designer and longtime Bezalel lecturer. Trained in the Netherlands at the Royal Academy of Art and Total Design, his modernist identities and visual systems helped shape Israel’s everyday visual landscape.

Liad Shadmi is an independent graphic designer, art director, and visual researcher. He is leading the international effort to recover Gross’s archive and is the principal researcher of an upcoming bilingual monograph on his work.
